Hawaiian Roma
Genus: Curcuma longa
Rhizomes: Large sized rhizomes, dusky orange outer skin with bright orange interior
Flavor: Mild, slightly sweet like a carrot followed by ginger aftertaste
Uses: Culinary, medicinal, topical applications, dyes, religious/cultural uses. Our preferred juicing variety.

This is the first season we are offering the Roma variety. Originally collected on our research trip to India, learn more about our trip here. This is a high yield variety that has adapted well to Hawaii. We have tested up to 8% in this variety. Given its mild and enjoyable flavor, this is our preferred variety for juicing. It is also the most edible variety in its raw form.
As with other curcuma longa varieties, Hawaiian red turmeric contains at least fourteen bioactive compounds. The most well known are the curcuminoids, however a variety of other lesser known compounds provide a host of various benefits including antifungal, antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, gastroprotective, neuroprotective and antioxidant properties.
